Deputy Speaker of the Indonesian House of Representatives Hidayat Nur Wahid (HNW) expressed appreciation and support for the plan of the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) to hold a halal festival with leaders from community organizations (URMAs) to leaders of political parties. HNW assesses that the program was very necessary and according to the history and term Halal Behlal at the beginning of the era of independence.
“Basically, the activity of Behlal Halal aims to bring a new spirit, to bind brotherhood and unity, both among Muslims in mass organizations and political organizations, as well as with citizens of the Indonesian nation. I support the MUI that is taking momentum,” Hedayat said in his statement, Tuesday (5/16/2023). ), This political year of an event that brings together not only the symbols of the mass organization and leaders of the Islamic religion, but also with political figures and leaders of political organizations.
HNW said that the activities of the halal behilal should continue not only in the political year, but also in the year after the end of the political event. This is to create harmony among the leaders of the society, both in mass organizations and in political organisations.
He also said that Halal Behalal was originally started in 1948. At that time, KH Abdul Wahab Hasabullah introduced the term Halal Behlal to Bung Karno who wanted to calm the hot political atmosphere in Indonesia.
He said that Bung Karno agreed at that time to hold a meeting after Ramadan by inviting all political figures to the State Palace. Bung Karno also gave the address of Halal-Behalal meeting in the spirit of friendship, unity and progress of the nation.
“Halal in the Indonesian context is not really just an activity of apology between Muslims, it can also be an event of reconciliation and unification of national figures from different backgrounds. It is good that MUI reminds us of the initial spirit of keeping the term/activity of Bihalal-Halal,” he continued.
HNW said that MUI will hold a halal bihalal festival in 2023 which invites not only personalities and leaders from Islamic organizations, but also RI MPR Chairman, RI DPR Chairman, RI DPD Chairman, Bank Indonesia Governor, TNI/Kabulri Commander, leaders of youth organizations, Center level religious council, relevant ministries, to the party’s general president.
The deputy head of the Shura Council of the Justice and Development Party also said that it is normal for the Halal Festival not to be held in the context of national unification in a political year only so that people are not divided into mass or political organizations. Moreover, the negative dynamics and effects of politics can create divisions among people throughout the year.
“It would be great if the MUI would continue to hold the halal pahlal as it is now, every year, so that divisions can be rectified and Indonesia’s religious cohesion and democratic political atmosphere can be maintained in harmony, with the motto that ‘Bineka Tunggal Ika’ and the unity of Indonesia.
