History of International Museum Day

World Museum Day was not officially established at first. According to the official website, International Council of Museums ICOM first brought together the various international museum communities at a meeting in 1951.

The meeting discussed the topic “Museums and Education” or “Museums and Education”. The idea for International Museum Day was inspired by the Museum Accessibility Framework developed at this meeting.

Then, in 1977, World Museum Day was officially established. The designation of International Museum Day aims to better unite the creative aspirations and efforts of the museum to capture the public’s attention.

In addition, International Museum Day also aims to convey the message that “museums are an important means of cultural exchange, cultural enrichment and development as well as cooperation and peace between nations.”

As the memorial event became more interesting and sophisticated, the International Council of Museums then proposed a theme for the first time in 1992. The theme for International Museum Day in 1992 was “Museums and the Environment” or “Museums and the Environment”.

With reports from the official website of the International Council of Museums, this year’s International Museum Day will focus on the three Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) promoted by the United Nations or the United Nations. The three objectives consist of:

  1. Goal 3 (a healthy and prosperous life)
Ensuring healthy lives and promoting well-being for all people of all ages, particularly with regard to mental health and social isolation.
  2. Goal 13 (Countermeasures to Climate Change)
Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts, implementing low carbon practices in the Global North and mitigation strategies in the Global South.
  3. Substantive point 15 (life on the mainland)
Protect, restore and promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, amplify the voice of indigenous leaders and raise awareness of biodiversity loss.
