The Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLHK) cooperates with the Open University (UT). This cooperation was marked by the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding by the Secretary General of the Ministry of Environment and Forests Bambang Hendrono and the Open University Chancellor Professor F. Ojat Drugat in Jakarta, Tue (16/5/2023).
After signing, Bambang revealed that the Open University was able to provide access to education for all levels of society. In this regard, the cooperation between the Ministry of Environment and Forests and the University of Texas is a manifestation of capacity building of human resources in the field of environmental development and forestry.
“Through this MoU, the Open University can also help strengthen the community to become entrepreneurs and increase the human resource capacity of the Ministry of Environment and Forests through the flexible lecturing methods implemented by the University of Texas. Bambang said that through the MoU on cooperation between the Ministry of Environment and Forests and the University of Texas, it is hoped that a new business formation will emerge between business actors coordinated by the Directorate-General for Sustainable Forest Management and communities coordinated by the Directorate-General for Social Forestry and Environmental Partnerships.
Bambang said the Ministry of Environment and Forestry has deployed field personnel to deal with the forest fires, Mangala Agni. Currently, this position has become a job position within the Ministry of Environment and Forests.
“Therefore, it is necessary to have a program that can support human resource development through education within the Ministry of Environment and Forests, one of which is through collaboration with the Open University,” explained Bambang.
Through this MoU, explained Bambang, the satellite program of the Open University can be directed to meet the educational needs within the Ministry of Environment and Forests, especially for Manggala Agni staff who are in the field. The choice of curriculum for Manggala Agni in the Open University can also be modified to strengthen the educational aspect of Manggala Agni officers. In this way, he continued, they will be able to compete and perform their duties better in the future.
Bambang added that community fire care (MPA) and forest extension officers can also participate in the KLHK-UT cooperation program, to get education as a form of human resource capacity building at the site level.
“Through this collaboration, the Ministry of Environment and Forests has great potential to get officers in the field to have the appropriate educational rights,” said Bambang.
In follow-up to the MoU, Bambang explained, the Secretary-General of the Ministry of Environment and Forests will issue a letter on socialization related to this MoU to work units within the scope of the Ministry of Environment and Forests so that they can. Pursue more technical cooperation agreements, as well as other activities that support performance achievements within the scope of the Ministry of Environment and Forests, as regulated by Regulation of the Minister of Environment and Forests No. 3 of 2022 on local cooperation.
Previously, the Ministry of Environment and Forests also cooperated through a memorandum of understanding with many universities in Indonesia, such as Brawijaya University, Gadjah Mada University, Bogor Agricultural Institute, etc. KLHK has entered into MoUs with several regional universities in Indonesia. To date, about 79 MoUs and cooperation agreements have been concluded between the Ministry of Environment and Forestry and universities in Indonesia. In total, there are 1,490 collaborations each with government agencies, commercial entities, civil society, and universities or other educational institutions.
Meanwhile, University of Utah President Professor Ugat Drugat said the Open University has long supported lecturing methods with a high degree of flexibility. This method is expected to support the development of human resources for the Ministry of Environment and Forests, which are spread across all environmental sites and forests in various regions.
