The government is urging the public to be selective about post-case vacancies advice 25 Indonesian citizens in Myanmar. The public is advised not to easily believe the lure of easy jobs and high salaries in fictitious advertisements.

Director of Placement and Protection for Indonesian Migrant Workers, Rendra Setiawan, said his party had conducted massive outreach about fake job advertisements to the public. Rendra stated that the Ministry of Manpower has also coordinated with the Ministry of Communications and Information regarding this matter.

“We also continue to increase cooperation with the Ministry of Communications and Informatics to remove content on social media that we refer to as smelling of fraud,” Rendra said at a press conference in Pariscream Poly, Tuesday (16/5/2023).

He appealed to the public not to be quickly calmed down by the current vacancy announcements. However, it is necessary to further ensure the correctness of the information in the vacancy

“We urge the public to double check if they have already been given questionable information,” he appealed.

On the same occasion, Director of the Protection of Indonesian Citizens of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Kemlu RI) Juha Nugraha stated that there were 2,103 cases related to online frauds. Cases are spread across Bangkok, Thailand, Myanmar, Vietnam, Laos and the Philippines.

“Finally what was quoted by the Indonesian Embassy in Manila, there are 242 Indonesian citizens we have. So currently there are 2103 of our citizens who have problems related to exploitation by online fraud companies,” he said.

According to Jouda, the most important thing now is to take preventive measures. One way, he said, is to raise public awareness of fraudulent patterns of job postings abroad.

“What was conveyed through social media was then promised a high salary, no special qualifications were required, and no work visa was used, but through fellow visa-free ASEAN countries, we are familiar with these patterns,” he explained.

Previously, it was reported that Bareskrim Polri was investigating the case advice against 25 Indonesian nationals who are victims of human trafficking with the lure of obtaining high salaries and lucrative facilities by working abroad.

“Victims were promised to become internet marketing operators with salaries of 12 million to 15 million rupees and commission if they reach the target,” said Director of Public Crimes (Dirtipidum) Bareskrim Polri, Brigadier General Djohandani Rahardjo Puru.

However, it turned out that they were instead working for an online scam company owned by Chinese nationals in Myawady, Myanmar.

“The victim was working for an internet scam company owned by Chinese nationals, and then she was locked up and guarded by armed men,” Djohandani explained.

Not only that, but tens of millions of salaries that were initially promised were never received by the victims. Even worse, they often receive violent treatment.

“When the victims do not reach their goal, they will be given penalties in the form of salary deductions, including labor and physical violence in the form of drying in the sun, jumping squats and others. Some are even subjected to beatings and electric shocks,” he said.
